Just like you, I used to think self-development is a one-time thing. It seemed as though all we needed to figure out is what we want, where we want to be and how to get there, but sadly that is not all that there is to this. I will tell you this for free, self-development is a journey that lasts a lifetime! It never ends. So, if you feel you’ve arrived at your destination, you need this post way more than those who are still trying to figure things out. Why? Because you will get stuck. Wondering how I know this?

I lost a writing gig that could potentially bring me a lot of money, that was when the realization hit me. I mean, I am a writer and I write well, if I say so myself, but tell me why this client think my writing is not up to par. I did everything that I would usually do and more but it didn’t meet up to the supposed new standard. That encounter made me start doubting myself. I lost confidence in my ability to write an engaging piece and in turn, I lost motivation for everything that required me to write.

I got stuck because I thought I had done all that I needed to do. While I had actually done a lot of work to get to where I am currently, I still needed to do more work to stay relevant. And that’s the order of the world, life is not straightforward. As we progress in life, we will face various circumstances that will require us to do more than we would usually do. For every step you take, you need to take more steps, this then makes self-development really important.

What exactly is self-development?

Self-development could mean different things to different people but the ultimate goal is the same for everyone – fulfilment. While mine might be fueled by the need to advance in my career, yours might be living a better life and for others, it could be a more rewarding life. But whatever the push is, self-development is a process of consciously improving oneself in various aspects of his or her life. It is the conscious and continuous pursuit of personal growth by improving one’s skills, talents, and knowledge.

Think of it as a tree that stops bearing fruits. The same way you would not hesitate to cut it off, not minding that it had once produced fruit, is exactly how a person can be discarded if they refuse to grow. Self-development is hinged on continuous growth. More like, don’t stop building yourself, don’t stop learning, don’t stop until you reach your maximum potential.

Here are 5 reasons why self-development is important

1. It helps you stay relevant

There are many people out there who can do what you can do twice as better as you can. It does not even have to be your career, as seemingly simple as your talent, there are more talented people out there. So, if you feel you’ve arrived and have refused to grow, watch AI take your job away from you. We live in a highly competitive world where innovation is the order of the day and this makes self-development important for everyone who wants to weather through the trends.

2. It boosts your confidence in yourself and your craft

The humility before the ‘pride’ is one thing that can’t be taken away from self-development. If you keep learning and putting in the required work, this will boost your confidence. You will discover more as you embark on your journey to personal growth. Your level of confidence will rise as you achieve your goals, develop new abilities, and improve at what you do. It becomes second nature to be confident.

The more you learn about something in which you are unsure, the more confident you will become, and the more confident you are, the more opportunities you can unlock.

3. It helps you to create wealth

Self-development makes you a wealthy person. I hope we can both agree today that wealth is beyond money, it is much more about the things that you have that can fetch you money. And that is the thing about self-development, the more you learn, the more skills and knowledge that you acquire. This makes you a walking asset literally because you are equipped with loads of things for wealth creation.

People will pay you for the difference you can make in their world but first, you have to do the work.

4. It opens you up to more opportunities

Opportunities are everywhere but you won’t find them if you don’t look for them. But we also know that it’s not a one-off type of looking, you have to be consistent with the search because new opportunities are created every day. For someone who is heavy on self-development, because you are steady looking for ways to be better at what you do, finding opportunities won’t be a coincidence.

5. It keeps you motivated

When you put effort into a thing and it yields result, you are motivated to put more effort into it. It’s the same for self-development, when you are consistent with it, you will see results and these results I believe, would be a source of motivation for you to keep going.

When you look back at your progress, I believe it would be enough inspiration to keep going because if you can do as much as you’ve done, then there’s definitely more to be done.

Now, it is over to you. Go and flourish.
