Just like that, it’s the end of the year already and I’ll be wrong to not write about the lessons 2021 taught me. I personally didn’t envisage the kind of year I had, to think I wanted it to end at some point and now I’m so shocked at how fast it ended. 2021 is the year so many things happened to me in a very short span. Before I could jack up from one, another had hit me, it was crazy. I could literally remember incidents like they were yesterday.

Let me begin by saying a big congratulations to you. In all that happened in the year, you are here and still standing. Look back at all those times you thought the year was going to break you and smile because though we were broken at some point, we are going out in one piece.

Looking back at the year, I sure made a lot of wrong decisions but they brought me here. This lady you see is a product of the good, bad, and ugly of the year. In all of this, I see growth and I’m thankful for everything that happened in the course of the year. Speaking of wrong decisions, I learned a lot of things the hard way in the year 2021 and I’ll be sharing some of them with you.

Here are 5 lessons 2021 taught me

1. Life is full of surprises, live in the present

It got to a point in the year where things stopped shocking me. It was too much to handle so I consciously numbed myself to feeling pain. Just while you are processing the loss of a loved one, another person has dropped dead. People were going through tough times, worse than yours so even though you needed people to feel your pain with you, they were busy with theirs. It was so painful to watch people’s plans shatter because all their life, they had planned for that moment only for life to take it away from them.

So, I made a decision to live in the present because life won’t stop pulling surprises on me. I decided to still be compassionate while I dealt with my troubles. Why push buying what I love forward when I could as well buy it now. I became really happy when I started living like this so I thought, could it be that life is teaching us a lesson to live in the present.

2. You can’t have it all so focus on what matters

Early to mid-year, it felt like the universe was out to sap all my energy. I wanted a lot of things and I was convinced I could have it all but there I was, lying to myself. The year had a lot of things to offer but I had to answer the questions, what do you really want and how far would you go to get it. At the point I battled depression, I knew that other things had to give so my mental health would not suffer. It got to a point where, in my pursuit for money, I began to stress my body but I had to chill so I could be well.

I guess a better way to say it is that, you cannot have it all at once therefore, focus on what matters to you at a  time. Life gets better that way.

3. Good friends are indispensable

I sometimes sit back and think about my friends, how we started off and where we are now. I would have run mad this year without my girls and I am not exaggerating. These girls know me so much that they know when to talk, when not to talk when to slap sense into me, when to leave me to make mistakes and when to prepare their shoulders because I need to cry.

From men talks to business plans, to market runs, to strategizing and re-strategizing, to resting and chilling in our weird ways, we held our hands and walked the year together. You don’t need too many but make sure you have at least one person that gets you. You’ll understand better when you do, that’s if you don’t already know.

4. Sometimes you need to be alone, it does not mean you are lonely

There was a time in the year when I faced rejection and I could not wrap my head around how someone will reject a whole me, Opeyemi. In all of the chaos, all I wanted was to be alone. I was so dejected and I felt lonely but in the midst of all this, I found the peace and quiet I needed.

I needed to face my fears and accept responsibility for the mess I had by myself put myself in. I needed to remind myself of the value I carry whether or not someone saw it. My alone period gave me the clarity and peace I needed and it’s about to become a ritual for me. A time when I’ll retreat and spend time with myself.

A book I read and really love, Good Vibes, Good Life by Vex King reinforced this. In the book, he stated that ‘you won’t always be important to other people all the time, and that’s why you have to be important to yourself. Learn to enjoy your own company, take care of yourself.’

5. Gift of men plus talent/skill makes the difference

I entered some places this year that I know that if not for some people that held my hands and pulled me along, I would not even come close to the door talk more of sitting in those spaces. If you think you are so talented, skilled, and gifted that you do not need people, I fear you are set for a life full of struggle. Sometimes, all you need is the right connection coupled with your preparedness to win in life.

While we prepare for the new year, I’ll like to remind you of how strong you are and how convinced I am that 2022 will be a great year for us. Just as I have shared lessons 2021 taught me, do well to also share with me some of the lessons 2021 taught you in the comment section.

Cheers to a new year

With love,

Opeyemi
