Do you know that to change your life, you also need to change your environment?

This post is inspired by the fact that many people are willing to have a better life. In fairness to them, they try so hard but all their efforts are frustrated. They end up feeling like losers. Nobody deserves to feel that way. Not even when you are trying. What then could be the problem? Could they be doing something wrong?

I took the time to think about this which led me to read a book titled willpower is not enough. At first, I thought, what more could I need than my willpower? But this book showed me that I needed to do more. Let me share some things with you

What do I mean by your environment?

Even though the community where you stay is primarily your environment, other things could be your environment. Who are your friends? What type of content are you exposed to? Who do you look up to? Where do you spend most of your time?

Your environment is anything that has your presence and attention. It includes your friends, colleagues, location, habits, and lifestyle.

You need to understand the power of your environment

Your chances of improving your life are based very heavily on the surroundings in which you find yourself. In some places, you have greater chances of improving your life while in some places, your chances are very dim. Your specific environment has a direct measurable impact on the rest of your life unless you actively change it.

Your environment forms every aspect of your life, from your income to your value system to your hobbies. Every idea you have comes from what you have been exposed to. Who you become and what you do with your life are constrained by the people around you and the quality of information you consume.

Most people are living small not because they don’t have the talent to live big but because their situation is not demanding more of them. They have not placed themselves in positions requiring them to become more than they currently are. You see those people you want to be like, they are not heroes. Don’t get me wrong, I mean they didn’t become heroes until they provided a solution to a universal problem. This means that anybody can become a hero. You just have to rightly position yourself in an environment that will open your eyes to problems and enable you to find solutions to it. You then become a hero.

Change your environment, change your life

If you are serious about changing your life, you have to be aware and accept a simple truth: Your environment is a strong factor. You can’t make a significant, lasting change without altering some elements of your environment. Your environment impacts you far more—for better or for worse—than you realize.

Think about it, is your environment helping you grow or holding you back?

If you’re trying to grow into the person you hope to be, it’s helpful to surround yourself with people who demonstrate those qualities you aspire to achieve. These people might include mentors from whom you can learn new skills, colleagues who cheer you on when you get discouraged, or friends who hold you accountable to your goals. Having positive people in your environment, people who encourage you, lift you, and support your dreams will dramatically improve your chances for success. In order to change your life, you must first change your environment.

Consider your habits and lifestyle too: are you intentionally placing yourself in situations and locations that spark growth? Real growth happens when we understand whom and what best supports what we want, and then align ourselves with those people and places that do.

To change your life, you need to strategically place yourself in environments that support your dreams and constantly push you to do great things.
